Post-doc position at Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics

Applications are invited for a Dean of Engineering Prize in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will work within the Nottingham Centre for Geomechanics (NCG). NCG brings together expertise from the worlds of geotechnical engineering, mathematics and material sciences to solve all forms of soil and rock-related engineering design and construction problems as well as to perform fundamental geotechnical research. The centre possesses extensive element testing facilities and a 2 metre radius geotechnical centrifuge for conducting small-scale model experiments at full-scale stress levels.

The appointee will work on a project which strives to relate the information gleaned from soil interface tests to specific design scenarios. This will involve performing physical modelling experiments to examine and better understand interface behaviour, specifically under cyclic loading. In addition, small-scale model tests will be performed for the specific design cases under consideration, allowing interface behaviour ‘in practice’ to be examined. By combining the knowledge developed from these two sets of tests, an analytical design model will be developed. The situation being investigated within this project is the axial resistance of pipelines subjected to longitudinal cyclic loading.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in designing and performing geotechnical physical model tests. A background in analytical or numerical modelling would also be beneficial. With the time-frame of this project, the appointee should be driven, hardworking and capable of working within a team to achieve goals efficiently. The successful candidate should have excellent written and communication skills. Candidates must hold a First Class Honours degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline, and will have just completed (or about to obtain) a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering.

The award will cover a £25,000 per annum, tax free stipend, for a 12-month postdoctoral researcher (UK/EU only). The researcher is expected to start on 01 August 2015 or as early as possible after this date.
