Nenad Bicanic passed away

Dear ALERT colleagues,
My friend and former colleague Chris Pearce from the University of Glasgow passed me very sad news: Emeritus Prof. Nenad Bicanic passed away on Saturday at his home in Croatia. I understand that his funeral will be in Zagreb on Wednesday, followed by a memorial service in Oxford at a later date. Nenad held academic positions at Zagreb, Swansea, Glasgow and Rijeka. He held the Regius Chair of Civil Engineering at Glasgow University (the oldest Chair in Engineering in the UK) from 1994 to 2010. Nenad was a major force behind the UK Association in Computational Mechanics, and he was also very active in ALERT Geomaterials in its early days, via Swansea and later on Glasgow. I am sure many colleagues will remember him with great fondness.
Best regards,
Minna Karstunen

Remark on the ALERT Doctoral School 2016 #2

As it was announced in the programme, this year some practical exercise sessions will be organized during the School; in order to actively and profitably participate to these practical session on numerical examples, you are requested to bring your own laptop (no additional laptops will be provided by the organisation).

The Organisers of the School built a Virtual Machine using the free (open source) VirtualBox software, which is available for all platforms: Windows, Mac and Linux. This means that all participants of the Doctoral School will be able to run the Virtual Machine we prepared on their personal laptop, regardless of their operating system. The two following two conditions must be strictly respected:

  1. You must have 25GB free space on your hard drive so you can download the
prepared Virtual Machine. We’ll have a few USB sticks with the files to download
and we’ll ensure that all participants have them downloaded on their laptops
    before the Saturday morning.
  2. In order to save time, you will need to have the VirtualBox software already installed on your laptop (https://www.virtualbox.org) by the Saturday morning (we’ll have only few installers ready on our USB sticks for Windows, Mac and Linux)

The usage of VirtualBox is very practical as all participants will have the same environment, ensuring a consistent experience in the audience.

See you in Aussois!
