Winter school on Multi scale approaches and multiphysics couplings in fluid and solid mechanics

Second announcement:
TEC 21 Winter school on “Multi scale approaches and multiphysics couplings in fluid and solid mechanics” (6th Edition)
Grenoble – France – 2-6 February 2026

Important societal issues require to solve problems of increasing complexity. A key vector of progress relies on multi-scale and multi-physics approaches. The objective of the winter school is to review the various approaches, numerical and experimental techniques used to tackle the complexity of today’s engineering, environmental and health-related problems. Lectures are illustrated through up-to-date examples. Afternoons are devoted to practical laboratory work, combining experiments and numerical modeling. The final day of the school will be dedicated to a workshop on “multiscale and multiphysics approaches in biomechanics”.

Web Page: https://www.tec21.fr/winter-school-2026/

The number of participants is limited and registrations are subject to availability.
Registration dead line: 1st December 2025.

Fully funded internship and PhD position at ISAE-SUPAERO on Extraterrestrial Soil Mechanics

We are pleased to announce a PhD opportunity on the subject of “Understanding Extraterrestrial Soil Mechanics Through Low-Gravity Laboratory Testing” at ISAE-SUPAERO in Toulouse. There is also a possibility for the student to complete a 3-to-6-month Masters-level internship on this project before starting the PhD.

The goal of this thesis is to further our understanding of the response of planetary surfaces to geotechnical testing. The thesis will involve terrestrial and low-gravity experiments using a new facility at ISAE-SUPAERO.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in geotechnical soil testing and those familiar with soil or granular mechanics.

The PhD thesis will be funded through the ERC GRAVITE project.

Master’s Research Internship – ESTP: Experimental Study of Soil Erosion with Photogrammetry and PIV

Within the framework of research on erosion phenomena, this internship work aims to deepen the understanding of soil erosion processes through an advanced experimental approach. It is based on improving the current capabilities of the Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA) by simultaneously integrating several measurement instruments and techniques, such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), high-speed cameras, and photogrammetry. In parallel, soil characterization tests (water content, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, etc.) will be carried out to establish a correlation between the geotechnical properties of soils and their erosion behavior. All these data will form a reference experimental database, which will later be used to develop a neural network model aimed at accelerating and automating the assessment of soil erosion risk.

2026 International School on “Soil-Structure and Fluid-Structure Interactions in OpenSees” (SFSI-OS)

Registrations for the 2026 SFSI-OS – Riva del Garda, 28 June-1 July 2026 – are now open.

2026 SFSI-OS will offer a full-immersion training programme dedicated to dynamic soil-structure, fluid-structure and soil-fluid-structure interactions, with reference to civil engineering structures subjected to seismic, hydrodynamic (tsunami and flood) and fire hazards.

Participants will engage in hands-on modelling sessions throughout the School, combining theory and practice to master simulation techniques across different levels of complexity.

The School is tailored for researchers, PhD students and professional engineers seeking to understand and master numerical modelling of coupled multiphysics interaction problems in OpenSees.

Two fully funded PhD positions – ANR Project Exo2GeCo (LMGC Montpellier & IMT Ales)

We are pleased to announce two fully funded PhD positions within the ANR project ExoGeCo. The project aims to unravel the mechanical origins of geometric cohesion, a newly identified form of cohesion emerging in assemblies of non-convex, interlocking grains without any adhesive interactions. These metagranular materials can form self-supported, load-bearing structures purely due to shape-induced entanglement.
To explore this phenomenon, Exo2GeCo combines Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations and 3D experimental investigations on custom-shaped grains to establish a unified framework linking grain geometry, contact networks, and macroscopic strength.

PhD 1 (LMGC – Univ. Montpellier): 3D numerical modeling of geometric cohesion using DEM.
PhD 2 (IMT Mines Alès): Experimental exploration using 3D-printed metagrains, shear/compression devices, and in-situ imaging.
