3 MSc (by research) positions available at Abertay University and University of Dundee

Centre of Tay-GENE (Tayside Centre for Geotechnical Engineering in Natural Environments), a joint initiative between Abertay University (AU) and University of Dundee (UoD), is currently looking for three 12-month MSc (by research) positions to study the negative impacts caused by climate change on managed non-urban land, particularly for sloping ground, and to develop novel adaption strategies. Each position provides a stipend of £14,057 and tuition fees paid up to £4,036 to fully cover the tuition fees for students for Home/EU applicants.

Project 1 (Hosted at AU): Utilising crushed dolerite columns to stabilise unstable substrates using microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP): coupling ground improvement and climate mitigation – laboratory approach

Project 2 (Hosted at AU):: Utilising crushed dolerite columns to stabilise unstable substrates using microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP): coupling ground improvement and climate mitigation – numerical modelling approach

Project 3 (Hosted at UoD): Centrifuge modelling of natural geotechnical systems

PhD position at L’Université de Pau et des Pays de L’Adour

L’Université de Pau et des Pays de L’Adour (http://www.univ-pau.fr/), in collaboration with Ifremer (www.ifremer.fr) and Total (www.total.com), invite applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship. The proposed research will focus on the interaction between gas compressibility and exsolution and the mechanical behavior of host sediment in geological conditions.

6th Biot Conference on Poromechanics

The 6th Biot Conference on Poromechanics ( http://biot2017.sciencesconf.org/ ) will be held just outside of Paris, France, at École des Ponts ParisTech and IFSTTAR, from July 9 to July 13, 2017. The Biot conference is organized only once every 4 years and is the main international event for experts in poromechanics. All topics related to porous solids that deform and contain one or several pore fluids are relevant. This edition will be held as a tribute to Olivier Coussy (1953-2010), who was the first recipient of the ASCE Biot medal. Deadline for abstract submission is September 15, 2016. Further details may be found on the attached flyer.
