COURSE IN SOIL MODELLING September 3rd- 7th, 2018

NTNU’s Geotechnical Group offers a PhD Course in Soil Modelling from September 3rd to 9th, 2018.

The course provides a background for development and application of the soil models used in finite element based computer codes. It focuses on soil behaviour, elasto-plastic theory, selected material models and their parameters. The aim is to provide a general theoretical framework for interpretation of the mechanical behaviour of soils.

The course is at postgraduate/PhD level. It is based on a combined mathematical and graphical approach but is designed to give a platform for practical application in geotechnical design.

Advanced course on Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation (LID 2018)

Advanced course on Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation (LID 2018), taught by Milan Jirásek in Prague, Czech Republic, 3-7 September 2018.

This course provides an overview of modeling approaches used in the mechanics of inelastic materials and structures, with special attention to an objective description of highly localized deformation modes such as cracks or shear bands. It is one of the RILEM educational courses. The course is intended for graduate students at the doctoral level, but it can be equally useful to motivated master students, post-doctoral researchers, or senior researchers who are not specialists in this field.

LARAM, the International School on ”LAndslide Risk Assessment and Mitigation”

LARAM, founded by the Geotechnical Engineering Group (GEG) of the University of Salerno in 2005, was envisioned to offer a permanent venue for PhD students, young researchers and renowned experts to interact and exchange ideas in the field of landslide risk. The main objectives of LARAM are: to develop high educational interdisciplinary programs for assessing, forecasting and mitigating landslide risk over large areas; to promote the creation of training programs aimed at solving real landslide risk problems using the most advanced theories and methodologies in the fields of geotechnical engineering, geomechanics, geology, physical geography, mathematical modelling, monitoring, GIS techniques, risk management and other relevant topics. These aims are achieved by means of yearly cycles of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences.

IS-Atlanta 2018 — Geo-Mechanics from Micro to Macro in Research & Practice

This is the fourth quadrennial international symposium organized under the auspices of Technical Committee 105 (Geo-Mechanics from Micro to Macro) of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). As with these previous events, this symposium seeks to advance the objectives of TC 105 to: promote co-operation and exchange of information about the behavior of soil grains and granular interactions; promote improved modeling of soil aggregates; encourage a micro-structural understanding of significant macroscopic behavior; facilitate discussion on the use of micro-structural measurements to enhance soil characterization procedures; and clarify the selection and use of continuum parameters in geotechnical engineering practice: website
