Project Description
It is well understood that microscopic interactions between water menisci and soil particles govern the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils. However, how water repellency affects those interactions is largely unknown. Successfully accounting for the effect of repellency on soil hydro-mechanical behaviour could yield significant benefits to geotechnical design. Soil water repellency naturally arises due to the deposition of plant oils or humic substances or after severe heating episodes, for example wildfires. Artificial treatments can, however, also be used to render soils permanently hydrophobic. Such treatment might be desirable to deter infiltration, for example in engineered cover systems where waste exposure to water may result in severe contamination of the surrounding landscape.
This project will exploit state-of-the-art experimental techniques to examine the evolution of water-repellent soil hydro-mechanical behaviour on the microstructural (water retention and pore size evolution) and macrostructural (strength and stiffness) scales. The project will take advantage of the long-term strong collaborative relationships between leading UK universities studying unsaturated soil behaviour to deliver an engaging and rewarding PhD experience.

PhD Position at Helmut-Schmidt-University Hamburg
Applications are welcome for a PhD position to investigate the dynamic impact of construction works on neighboring freshly installed concrete structures within the soil (e.g. piles). The research will focus on numerical and experimental investigations with focus on geodynamics. The project is available to candidates holding a master degree (M.Sc.) in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, earth science or similar.
Strong interest and experience in numerical methods in geomechanics, constitutive modelling and/or soil dynamics are advantageous. The candidate should have very good knowledge in English (writing/reading/speaking). German language skills are eligible.

PhD Position at Heriot-Watt University – Experimental Soil Mechanics
Applications are welcome for a PhD position to investigate the response of soils subjected to variations of temperature and water flow conditions through an experimental campaign involving both conventional and state-of-the-art laboratory testing. The project is available to all students, whether home, EU or overseas. The successful candidate should possess at minimum a masters and undergraduate degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, earth science or a similar field. Strong interest and experience on experimental soil mechanics is an essential requirement of this project. The PhD student will get full access to the state-of-the-art facilities of the Geotechnical and GeoMaterials Laboratory at Heriot-Watt University, which includes equipment for unsaturated soil testing (e.g. unsaturated triaxial, oedometer and direct shear apparatus, pressure cells, temperature & environmental chambers) as well as standard geotechnical testing.

The closing date for the applications is October 21st, 2019.
Post-doctoral researcher in computational geomechanics at Delft University of Technology
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in computational modelling of gas-induced fractures in low-permeability porous media. The post-doctoral researcher will push the boundaries of existing understanding of coupling between gas flow in low permeability porous media and fracturing process, through the development of theoretical models and numerical tools. It is anticipated that the researcher will need to develop models which include discrete pathways in a heterogeneous (continuum) material. Challenges exist in simulating the development of the discrete pathways and the impact of the heterogeneity on the macroscopic behaviour. The simulation tools developed will be based on existing finite element tools for multiphase flow and mechanics, which require novel additions to include discrete pathways. Close collaboration with experimentalists is expected.
The closing date for applications is 11th October 2019.
