PhD/Postdoc position at NTNU Trondheim

This Postdoc/PhD study is aiming to provide improved knowledge for a safer E39 highway in western Norway. Focus is to be on effective countermeasures for debris and mudflow hazards. This Postdoc/PhD study shall look for innovative solutions and explore possibilities. The study shall improve the understanding of the dynamic forces from and the behaviour of the fluidized soil/water mass in the flow path, in narrow spaces and structure underpasses. For some specific sections of the E39 highway, the parameters that are important for debris flows shall be established and/or measured. In the physical model, various countermeasures shall be applied and studied with respect to forces, efficiency and functionality. This Postdoc/PhD study needs to consider effects of the changing climate. The application deadline is 22nd November 2015. W(H)YDOC 2015

Following the previous W(H)YDOC workshops organised in Paris (200220052008, 2012), the scope of W(H)YDOC 15 is to bring together young doctors in geomechanics within an informal three days invited Workshop to allow for the presentation of the researches carried out during their PhD thesis.

The workshop is aimed at favouring informal and constructive exchanges about recent research results and ideas. No specific research topics are suggested, in order to highlight the variety of the researches presently carried out in the invited universities. The number of contributions has been limited so as to allow for individual presentations and discussions of all contributions.

Internationally well known Professors also participate to the workshop. In 2015, keynote lectures will be delivered by:
  • Prof. Antonio Gens (UPC Barcelona),
  • Prof. Christopher Spiers (U. Utrecht),
  • Prof. Henri Van Damme (MIT-CNRS).

In 2015, 18 selected PhD students from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, UK and USA will present their  work.

The W(H)YDOC 2015 Prize will be given to the best presentation made during the workshop.

Any interested person is warmly encouraged to attend the Workshop. Participation to the workshop is free but registration is mandatory.

Further information are provided on the website of W(H)YDOC 2015.

Positions at Duke University

Duke University has a multi area opening that includes geomechanics, among others. The preference in that area is on “coupled problems in geomechanics with application to energy production, energy storage, hazardous/nuclear waste storage/disposal, and environmental protection”. Note, that applications that bridge two or more of the areas mentioned in the link and which entail cross-departmental collaborations are particularly encouraged. For more details see the link.
