PhD position at RWTH Aachen University and Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble

We are seeking motivated candidates for a PhD project to study the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of mudstones. The project is a joint study between RWTH Aachen University and Université Joseph Fourier Grenoble, making combined use of unique facilities of both laboratories. The student will spend 2 years in Aachen and 1 year in Grenoble, and receive training in both laboratories. Results will be reported in joint publications and in team visits to both laboratories.

The aim of the project is to understand the microphysical mechanisms behind the complex rheology of mudstone deformed experimentally. Preserved samples will be deformed with controlled fluid pressure inside a Micro-CT, to allow monitoring the displacement field in the sample in addition to stress-strain measurements. These data will be used to perform Digital Image Correlation and calculate the strain rate field in the sample, with special attention to the localization of deformation. These results will be the base for subsampling key locations in the samples with accurately known deformation history, and investigated using Cryo-BIB-SEM to preserve the delicate internal structures and resolve critical microstructures.

Candidates must have a MSc or equivalent and be fluent in English. Experience with any of the fields Experimental Rock Deformation, Image Processing, Digital Image Correlation, Ion Beam polishing, Cryogenic Scanning Electron Microscopy and Microstructural Analysis is welcome. Good knowledge of math, physics and chemistry is an advantage. Speaking German or French is welcome but not required.
