While the modern areas are full of excellent examples of recent architecture, monuments remain within the city dating from Roman and Byzantine times. Today, Thessaloniki is an important commercial port with more than 1 million people and a busy city with a multitude of cultural, scientific and other events, offering excellent accommodations and modern conference and exhibition facilities. Thessaloniki is in the list of World Heritage Cultural Sites of UNESCO for the plethora of Byzantine churches that survive today.

The conference is dedicated to the memory of late Professor Ioannis Vardoulakis on the occasion of 10th years from his death in recognition of his contributions and achievements in Mechanics A special session in honor of Professor Vardoulakis is organized by Professors Panos Papanastasiou (University of Cyprus) and Ioannis Stefanou (Ecole des Ponts, Paris Tech, France).
