Applications are welcome for a PhD position to investigate the response of soils subjected to variations of temperature and water flow conditions through an experimental campaign involving both conventional and state-of-the-art laboratory testing. The project is available to all students, whether home, EU or overseas. The successful candidate should possess at minimum a masters and undergraduate degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, earth science or a similar field. Strong interest and experience on experimental soil mechanics is an essential requirement of this project. The PhD student will get full access to the state-of-the-art facilities of the Geotechnical and GeoMaterials Laboratory at Heriot-Watt University, which includes equipment for unsaturated soil testing (e.g. unsaturated triaxial, oedometer and direct shear apparatus, pressure cells, temperature & environmental chambers) as well as standard geotechnical testing.
