The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We conduct research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences. We offer an excellent work environment, located in Berlin, with state of the art research infrastructure and special laboratories.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:
Scientific contribution to the binational research project COMET (Coupled micromechanical mod-elling for the analysis and prevention of erosion in hydraulic and offshore infrastructures) funded by the DFG research agency.
This will involve:

— a doctoral work, with an eminently numerical focus but also involving experimental tasks, to investigate the erosion-related phenomena involved in the installation of suction bucket foundations for offshore wind turbines — the use and further development of our in-house micromechanical simulation tool (LBM and DEM methods) (this shall possibly involve the further adaption of the algorithms for large spatial configurations, threedimensional conditions and for a parallel computation by means of graphical processors (GPUs) and clusters)
— the performance of physical tests of the installation of a small-scaled suction bucket model into granular samples at our partner research institute IRSTEA in Aix-en-Provence (France)
— a numerical analysis of the installation of suction buckets into the marine soil regarding their penetration resistance and the conditions that lead to piping failures
— documentation and critical assessment of the experimental and numerical results
— publication and presentation of results, interdisciplinary exchanges with research partners
— the composition of a doctoral thesis in English in the frame of a binational PhD initiative joint-ly supervised by French and German universities (these en cotutelle)

Your qualifications:
— successful university degree (Diploma/Master) specializing in Civil engineering, Physical engi-neering, Computational Sciences or a comparable field of study
— previous experience or specialized education in Numerical Methods, Multiphysics and Geotechnics
— scientific programming skills; knowledge and previous experience with C/C++, Fortran and CUDA will be particularly appreciated
— very good knowledge of English language spoken and written; basics in German and French will be appreciated
— willingness to do an internship at the partner institute IRSTEA in Aix-en-Provence for a period of 9-12 months
— high level of engagement, cooperation and teamwork and also a responsible and independent way of working

We offer:
— interdisciplinary research at the interface between politics, economics and society
— work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
— outstanding facilities and infrastructure
