PhD position in geotechnical engineering (piling), KTH, Sweden

We are seeking a doctoral student to KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. The work tasks primarily consist of doctoral studies within the ongoing research project “Drivability of Piles in Blocky Ground”. Piling is a common foundation method; however, driven concrete piles may experience structural failure if they encounter boulders when installed in glacial till or eskers. Such events may cause significant delays and cost overruns in construction projects. The probability of premature refusal due to boulder encounter is difficult to assess, and existing assessment methods are highly simplified, which often gives rise to contractual disputes. The objective of the project is to further develop a probabilistic methodology capable of quantifying the risk for premature refusal with respect to both economic and environmental consequences.

    • I am keen to pursue a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering, driven by my strong interest in the drivability of piles in blocky ground conditions. This area represents an innovative and highly relevant field of research, with significant practical implications for the construction and infrastructure industries.
Pile driving in blocky or heterogeneous ground presents complex challenges, including potential installation difficulties and an increased risk of failure during driving. Addressing these issues through systematic research can contribute to safer, more efficient foundation design and construction practices.

I have gained two years of research experience working as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) and Project Associate, during which I developed a solid foundation in geotechnical investigation and analysis. Additionally, I have published a conference paper with Springer, reflecting my commitment to academic research and dissemination of knowledge.
I am motivated to further explore this domain through doctoral research and contribute meaningful advancements to the field of geotechnical engineering.
