Research scientist position in the Neutron and X-ray Tomography in Grenoble (NeXT-Grenoble)

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international centre for scientific research situated in Grenoble, France. It is Europe’s leading neutron science facility. We receive over 2000 visiting scientists per year to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. The Science Division currently has a vacancy for a Research Scientist (f/m) in neutron imaging.

NeXT-Grenoble (Neutron and X-ray Tomography in Grenoble) was born in 2016 from the collaboration between the ILL, world-leading institution in neutron-based techniques (also thanks to its flux, the most intense in the world with its 1.5E15 neutrons per second per cm2, with a thermal power of 58.3 MW) and Universite Grenoble Alpes through Laboratoire 3SR, leading center in the experimental investigation of porous media and geomaterials.

Assistant Professor in the area of Civil Engineering, Infrastructure and Systems

The Division of Engineering and Applied Science at the California Institute of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (MCE) in the area of Civil Engineering, with emphasis on infrastructure and systems. We are seeking candidates with an outstanding research record and a strong commitment to teaching. The rapid growth of population and megacities requires sustainable and resilient infrastructure, posing significant scientific and technological challenges to be tackled by the most innovative research. The MCE department is seeking applications in all areas that are synergistic to civil engineering, infrastructure and systems. The search is aimed at the assistant professor level.

Interested applicants should submit an electronic application at: https://applications.caltech.edu/job/mce

Review of applications will begin on November 26, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. The term of the initial appointment at the assistant professor level is four years, with appointment contingent upon completion of a PhD in a relevant field.

Questions about the application process may be directed to ceis@caltech.edu

2nd level specializing master in “Tunnel Engineering”. Politecnico di Milano

In March 2019, the II edition of the 2nd level specializing master in “Tunnel Engineering” will be activated at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano. The Director is Professor Claudio di Prisco. The master is open to candidates who have a Master of Science in Civil or Environmental Engineering. For foreign applicants, the master is open to students holding equivalent qualifications. The deadline for the application is 13th February 2019.

Research assistantship opening in modelling of large deformation poroplasticity

The Computational Mechanics lab at University of Illinois at Chicago has a research assistantship opening for a PhD student or postdoc in the area of modelling of large deformation poroplasticity. The ideal candidate has experience and interest in continuum constitutive modelling for geomaterial plasticity and coupled fluid flow and solid deformation, and programming experience. The models will be input into a meshfree code for very large deformation, but the emphasis of this research will be the constitutive modelling and numerical implementation. Applicants should send a CV (include GRE and, if applicable, TOEFL/IELTS scores) and a list of at least 3 references to Professor Craig Foster at fosterc@uic.edu.

Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position available at the University of Bath (UK)

A Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position is available at the University of Bath (UK) from November 2018 to December 2020. The PDRA will work with researchers from five UK universities and the British Geological Survey on the EPSRC-funded ACHILLES Project.

ACHILLES will examine how ‘long linear infrastructure assets’, such as road and railway slopes, pipeline bedding and flood protection structures, can be better maintained and monitored to make them more resilient for the future.

The role of the applicant will be to identify age and climate-driven deterioration mechanisms observed in field and laboratory experiments. They will then liaise closely with infrastructure asset owners to provide evidence of these processes at the full scale.

Please contact Dr Kevin Briggs (k.m.briggs@bath.ac.uk) in the first instance.

Cosserat Continuum Mechanics book by Ioannis Vardoulakis

Before his tragic accident, Ioannis Vardoulakis was working on his new book on Cosserat Continuum Mechanics. The draft was almost ready. With the help of his family, Eleni Gerolymatou, Ioannis Stefanou, Manolis Veveakis and myself have prepared the manuscript for publication.

I am glad to let you know that it has just been published by Springer in Lecture Notes in Applied and Computational Mechanics series (https://www.springer.com/us/book/9783319951553). I am sure that this new book will be of great interest for the ALERT community and more generally for researchers and scholars interested in multiscale modelling as it provides the fundamental tools of Cosserat theory with examples and applications to the mechanics of granular media.
