DATES: February 3 to February 7, 2025 VENUE: Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic REGISTRATION FEE: Free, but space is limited to 60 participants and, should the place be fully booked, ALERT institution PhD students will be provided access with a priority. Priority held till November 30, 2024.
LIST OF SPEAKERS: Prof. David Mašín, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic Prof. Claudio Tamagnini, University of Perugia, Italy Prof. Ivo Herle, Technical University of Dresden, Germany Dr. Gertraud Medicus, University of Innsbruck, Austria Dr. Alexandros Petalas, Durham University, UK Dr. Merita Tafili, University of Bochum, Germany Dr. Filippo Masi, University of Sydney, Australia
In the school, the basic principles of soil constitutive modelling will be introduced, but the emphasis will be extended beyond mathematical formulations and equations to include graphical representations of models. It will be demonstrated how models with very different mathematical foundations often share similar predictive capabilities. Recent developments in more intricate areas, such as fabric anisotropy, cyclic loading and liquefaction effects, THM double structure coupling, and rate effects, will also be highlighted. Most recent approaches to machine-learning based constitutive models will also be covered. Rather than limiting discussions to single element levels, it will be emphasized that laboratory experiments are not merely element tests and that proper model calibration should treat them as boundary value problems. Additionally, lecture units on the impact of constitutive model selection on boundary value problem simulations will be included. Considering the large scale, macroelements will be introduced as an alternative way of describing the response of geotechnical structures. Hands-on computer sessions will also be included to allow students to practice calibrating selected constitutive models manually using freeware software tools, as well as with automatic tools.
The preliminary schedule is as follows: each lecture/exercise unit will last 50 minutes, with seven units per day between 8:30 AM and 5 PM. The program on Friday will conclude at 12:20 PM, totalling 32 lecture/exercise units.
The lecturers will include David Mašín, Ivo Herle, Claudio Tamagnini, Gertraud Medicus, Alexandros Petalas and Merita Tafili

ALERT PhD students will have a priority if registered before 30.11.2024.
Detailed programme will be available by October 25, 2024.
The 14th ALERT Olek Zienkiewicz course 2024 will be organized by INRAE from April 22nd to 26th in Aix-en-Provence, France.
The title of the school is: “Hydro-mechanical behavior of geomaterials for civil engineering structures: Theoretical models, simulations, lab testing and risk analysis“
The content of the course will address the characterization and the modeling of the hydro-mechanical behavior of geomaterials from the microscale to the structure scale. You will find more details in the attached flyers both from scientific and practical point of view.

ALERT OZ Course 2022
There are still no propositions for the ALERT OZ Course 2022, so you are welcomed to send us your proposition!
Further information will arrive later. Hoping to see you next year in Aussois !
The 12th ALERT Olek Zienkiewicz course 2021: Looking into the rhizosphere: the interface between plant science and soil mechanics will be held online on 18-20 May 2021. It is organised in five sessions. The course will be preceded by preparatory lectures organised in four sessions over two day, 13 & 20 April 2021.
The course is organised by the Alliance of Laboratories in Europe for Education, the University of Strathclyde (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Department of Geotechnical Engineering & Geosciences), CIMNE (Geomechanics Group) and TERRE Network. The course is coordinated by Alessandro Tarantino (University of Strathclyde) and Enrique Romero (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya).
The course is free of charge for participants affiliated to institutions member of ALERT Geomaterials. The web platform to register is not yet opened but registrations can already be made by email (see attachment above).
first of all, the Board of Directors and the Bureau hope you (and your family) are doing well in these weird and difficult times…
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and after careful consideration, the Bureau and the BoD have decided to cancel the ALERT workshop in 2020 — it will take place in 2021 (from September 27 to September 29). Concerning the OZ course, we propose to postpone it to April 2021.
The election of the Board of Director was supposed to be organized this year and after discussions, it is decided to postpone it in 2021. The current Bureau and the Board will remain in charge by a prorogation of their mandate for the ordinary matters.
*All the other activities will be organized remotely:* – for the doctoral school, we have decided to keep it for this year– it will be taught and attended remotely, though. – we have decided not to postpone also the PhD prize as well as the invited lecture, also these two events will take place online (either pre-recording it or giving it online via one of the several available platforms for distance teaching).
The 11th ALERT Olek Zienkiewicz course 2019: Petroleum Geomecganics will be held from the 28th to the 31st of October 2019 in Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, France
The course is organised by the Alliance of Laboratories in Europe for Education, Research and Technology (ALERT), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Ecole des Ponts ParisTech.
The 10th ALERT Olek Zienkiewicz Winterschool 2018: Natural versus compacted clayey soils: from micro to macro behaviour and modellingwill be held from the 5th to the 9th of November 2018 in Bari, Italy.
The Winterschool is organised by the Alliance of Laboratories in Europe for Education, Research and Technology (ALERT), the Politecnico di Bari and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. It will focus on the hydro-mechanics of clayey soils, either natural, or compacted, and provide knowledge about their genesis and consequent features at the micro to meso-scale, and about how their macro-response varies with the micro to meso-features.
