PhD position: Numerical modeling of localization in (partially) saturated low permeability geomaterials. Ecole Centrale Nantes/Université de Liège

This thesis deals with the constitutive modeling of low permeability partially saturated geomaterials, in the framework of enhanced poromechanics. Partial saturation means in this context that the porous network is occupied at least by two different fluid phases, having their own wetting properties. The classical poromechanical model, based on Biot’s theory, will be therefore generalized in order to account for stress/strain localization, within the solid phase, and fluid fingering, within the fluid phases. Strain localization will be treated making use of strain gradient theory and plasticity whilst partial saturation following a phase-field modeling approach to multi-phase fluid flow. To this aim, on the one hand, a fully coupled gradient constitutive law of the porous skeleton and the saturating (mixture of) fluid(s) will be assumed, which means that the free energy of the overall continuum will be a function not only of strain and mass concentrations of the fluid components, but also of their gradients. On the other hand, irreversible deformations of the solid skeleton will be modeled adopting a suitable plasticity model. This approach stems from previous results published by the
coordinator of the project [1-2] and can be partly retrieved in a line of research pursued by Collin and Kotronis, see e.g. [3-4], for what concerns the gradient approach to (un)saturated poromechanics.

Position for Postdoctoral Researcher in Geotechnical Engineering. Aalto University, Finland

We seek a qualified and motivated individual with enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality research to work as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the department of Civil Engineering. The main research area is the laboratory testing of geotechnical engineering materials. Our speciality is the testing of soft, anisotropic clays as well as the testing of stabilized soils. We have much expertise on these areas, but we want to strengthen it by building a bigger research group, where you would be one of the key member. We are also applying for an additional financing to ensure long-term research. Besides laboratory testing, our group consists of specialists on numerical modelling and constitutive modelling of soils, which opens you the possibility to develop constitutive models based on your experimental data. The position is for a period of 2 years, with a mid-term review, and it should start around December 2018. The position is intended for full-time work.

PhD position: Cemented waste deterioration by sulphate attack: chemistry and effect on structural and mechanical properties

Candidates are sought for a PhD position in the field of experimental investigation aimed at improving phenomenological understanding of the chemistry of delayed ettringite formation (DEF) and of its effect on mineralogical, structural and mechanical properties of cemented waste forms. This is set in the context of cement-waste solidification/stabilization studies for radioactive waste disposal application. This is a joint PhD programme by SCK•CEN and ONDRAF/NIRAS in collaboration with Gent University, Belgium, under the mentorship of Prof. Nele De Belie. The potential candidates should hold a master’s degree preferably in material science (good knowledge of chemistry) or civil/structural or mechanical engineering and should preferably have an exposure to chemistry and mechanics. The position is open for European as well as international candidates (except restricted nationalities, which can be found in the SCK•CEN academy portal).
