The laboratory for Soil Mechanics (LMS) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) is looking for 3 PhD candidates in the area of geo-technical engineering and environmental geotechnics for the project BIOGEOS (BIO-mediated GEO-material Strengthening). The project is supported by an Advanced Grant of the European Research Council, awarded to Prof. Lyesse Laloui.
A PhD position is open at the 3SR Laboratory in Grenoble (France). Title: Effect of varying temperature and degree of saturation on soils THM behaviour: application to energy geostructures.
The project is mainly experimental and aims to investigate the thermal behaviour of unsaturated soils. More details can be found in the attached document. The goal of this project is to investigate the multi-scale behaviour of clay rock, going from microscopic to macroscopic scale. The research will be based on multi-scale
approach and numerical method allowing to model microstructure media in a double-scale framework (FEMxFEM). The PhD position is available at iMMC (UCL) in collaboration with the 3SR Laboratory (P. Bésuelle, CNRS, UGA).

The position is open to holders of a doctorate in civil engineering and more specifically in the thematic of geotechnical earthquake engineering, or he/she should justify an equivalent level especially for foreign applicants. The candidate should have knowledge and strong interest for experimental research, an experience in dynamic physical modelling will be very much appreciated. For complementary purpose with the actual team in Nantes, the candidate must also have good knowledge of numerical modeling in the field of geotechnical engineering and in particular in the modeling of dynamic soil response.
