Mini symposium ‘Micromechanics of rock deformation and its impact on rock-fluid system interactions’

A mini symposium, entitled ‘Micromechanics of rock deformation and its impact on rock-fluid system interactions’, is organised by Elli-Maria Charalampidou, Sergei Stanchits and Francesco Cecinato during the 12th HSTAM 2019 International Congress on Mechanics, which will take place in Thessaloniki (Greece) from the 22nd to the 25th of September 2019.

The symposium focuses on rock (including weakly cemented sediments) deformation and the way it affects the rock-fluid system. The scope is primarily to explore how factors such as the type and degree of cementation, the grain texture (mainly shape, roundness, sorting and packing), the pore space architecture and connectivity and/or any kind of material heterogeneity (natural of laboratory induced) may create favourable conditions for the onset, evolution and/or reactivation of deformation patterns in rocks. Moreover, this session aims to examine the degree to which the micromechanics of the identified deformation structures in different rock types affect the sealing potential of the rock-fluid system. The sessions will: a) include both laboratory and field scale studies b) reflect on the method or combination of methods used to describe qualitatively and quantitatively the identified deformation patterns and c) expand this knowledge to analytical solutions and numerical simulations used to predict localised deformation or reactivation of pre-existing deformation features in rocks.

We would like to encourage you to submit an abstract for our symposium. Please note that the deadline for abstracts (300 word limit) is on the 13th of January 2019 and you can proceed with the submission by using the following link:  http://www.12hstam2019.gr/submission

12hstam2019 – SUBMISSION

www.12hstam2019.gr

Abstract submission Scientists and engineers working in the research areas of the congress are invited to submit an abstract of about 300 words in English for oral or poster presentation by 30 December 2018. The abstract should state clearly the purpose, procedure, results and conclusions of the full paper. It should be in word or pdf format following the abstract template (Word Template).

To better track the submissions for our symposium, please, also forward a copy of your abstracts to me (e.charalampidou@hw.ac.uk) or Sergei (S.Stanchits@skoltech.ru) or Francesco (francesco.cecinato@unimi.it).

We would also like to ask you to forward this information to anyone you think may be interested.

We are looking forward to welcome you in Thessaloniki next September!

Best wishes,

Elma, Sergei, Francesco!
