Opening for a faculty position at Virginia Tech

The Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Geotechnical Engineering effective January 2020. The position is anticipated to be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, but exceptional candidates will be given consideration for the Full Professor rank. A Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely aligned field is required. Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), or completion of the FE examination with plans to pursue PE registration, and professional experience are desirable but not required. Evidence of scholarship, research, and a record of external funding is required for consideration of appointment at the Associate and Full Professor levels.

The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering Program, including enthusiastic pursuit of collaborative and transdisciplinary research opportunities. Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarly work, sponsored research, undergraduate instruction, and specialized graduate education. The CEE Department includes 59 faculty members, and approximately 350 full-time graduate students and 625 undergraduate students. The Via Endowment allows the Department to offer a significant number of scholarships and fellowships to highly qualified students. The Geotechnical Program operates state-of-the-art geotechnical research facilities, including the W.C. English Geotechnical Laboratory, field test sites, full-scale test facilities, and both on-shore and off-shore site characterization equipment.

Outstanding candidates with a strong background in the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering are encouraged to apply. Focus areas of this search include foundation engineering, dams and levees, advanced shear strength, seepage barriers, soil-structure interaction, soil improvement, transportation geotechnics, coastal protection, geotechnical monitoring, reinforced soil systems, underground construction, laboratory and in-situ site characterization, and risk, reliability and resilience in geotechnical engineering. Candidates with interests in other growth areas of geotechnical engineering are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will be encouraged to pursue opportunities to participate in the geotechnical components of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary 21st-century global challenges, such as intelligent infrastructure, and economical and sustainable materials. In addition, the successful applicant is expected to develop a portfolio of external funding from governmental agencies and private industry, as well as to contribute to the growth and mission of Virginia Tech’s Center for Geotechnical Practice and Research. The candidate should be able to contribute to the instructional mission of the program, including teaching practice-oriented courses.
