STRESS DISTRIBUTION ON A GAS PIPE BURIED INTO A SOIL

This PhD thesis will be conducted with GRT Gaz, the French company in charge of gas transportation. The aim of this poject is to better understand the stress distribution on a gas pipe buried into a soil as well as the stress distribution around the pipe. Different load configurations will be assumed (load in the soil surface, installation of a concrete diffusion slab, …).

Location : 3SR, Grenoble (some weeks at GRT Gaz in Paris are planned)

Gross salary : ≈ 2000 € / month

PhD position on granular mechanics available in Grenoble

We are looking for outstanding candidates for a PhD project we have that is starting this October at Laboratoire 3SR, Grenoble. It’s to do with packing and deformation problems in granular materials varying shape and friction, and well as Level Set DEM.

Post-doctoral researcher opportunity at the University of Nottingham, UK

The Nottingham Centre for Geo-mechanics (NCG) will be undertaking a large multi-disciplinary project related to the rehabilitation of open pit mines by flooding to create ‘pit lakes’, with a focus on the geotechnical, environmental, and long-term management challenges. The project, named Risk Assessment of Final Pits During Flooding (RAFF), is funded by the European Commission Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and includes project partners from across Europe. The project will run until the end of May 2022. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with expertise in numerical modelling and elements scale testing to join our group. The main role of this appointee will involve performing numerical modelling of pit lake slopes, incorporating the effects of unsaturated soil behaviour and considering the heterogeneous nature of the spoil material used in construction of the slopes. As such, the successful candidate should have a background with constitutive models relevant to geotechnical engineering and their application within numerical modelling packages. The researcher will also conduct element-scale testing of soils with support from NCG technical staff, hence some background in experimental geomechanics would be an asset. The project will also include physical model testing using a geotechnical centrifuge (performed by a separate researcher), hence some experience with physical modelling would be beneficial. Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Division of Geology and Geotechnics at Chalmers is looking for an Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering who is passionate about pushing the state-of-the-art of modelling coupled processes (thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical) into geotechnical engineering applications. You will join a diverse gender-balanced research group with ambition to become internationally leading in Geotechnical Engineering with focus on natural geomaterials.

As Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer, you will contribute to teaching and development of the educational portfolio both at undergraduate and Masters levels, as well as providing education as part of Continuous Professional Development to the industry. In parallel, you will conduct your brand of research independently. In particular, we would like you to lead the development of research areas related to coupled processes in porous media, encountered in geo-structures, such as road, railway and flood embankments, dams, and tunnels. We also expect you to actively contribute to our core research in soft soil engineering. An important part of the position is to engage with industry, initiating collaborations to enable innovative solutions for major stakeholders.

Fixed-term Post-Doc contract to work in Biocementation in the University of Lisbon, Portugal – Project BIOSOIL

IST-ID, University of Lisbon, Portugal, is seeking for candidates for one post-doctorate fixed-term contract in project BIOSOIL, focused on Biocementation as soil improvement technique. This is a up to 30 months fixed-term contract, monthly remuneration 2128.34 Euros, starting in September 2019. The call ends at 24 July 2019.

We are selecting candidates having a PhD in Science and Engineering of Materials, Bioengineering/Biosensors, Physics/Nanotechnology or Civil/Geotechnics/Hydraulics. The work to be developed is numerical simulation combined with experimental work in soil samples (porous media and textured surfaces) treated by biocementation. The candidate will define the key parameters related with biocementation mechanisms to be monitored with integrated sensors. Will also contribute to the dissemination of the project (PTDC/ECI-EGC/32590/2017).

Professor of Experimental Soil Mechanics for Sustainability at Delft University of Technology

Applications are invited for a Professor of Experimental Soil Mechanics for Sustainability. The position is proposed to improve our understanding of the fundamental mechanical behaviour of soils undergoing ageing and cyclic environmental loads, and to provide new solutions to the present and future challenges of the built environment. The focus is on developing new experimental techniques and strategies to better understand and tune the response of soils to increasingly high (time-dependent and dynamic) loadings. Emerging sensor and imaging technologies offer the opportunity to develop a new generation of experimental techniques for soil testing in the laboratory and in the field.

Postdoctoral Position in Granular Mechanics at the University of Glasgow

A two-year EPSRC funded Research Associate position is available within the Glasgow Computation Engineering Centre at the University of Glasgow. The ambitious project aims to apply the multiscale quasicontinuum (QC) method to granular systems using the discrete element modelling (DEM). A granular QC method would allow fully resolved discrete simulations in areas of interest (e.g. at localisations) but a more efficient coarse-grained continuum simulation to be carried out away from these areas. The Research Associate will develop an open-source granular QC method with the aim of significantly accelerating DEM simulations for problems with localisations and with multiphysical challenges (e.g. mechanical and thermal coupling).  You will become a member of the Glasgow Computation Engineering Centre (www.gla.ac.uk/gcec), a research group consisting of 10 academics with a wide range of interests in computational mechanics.

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in engineering, applied mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Applicants must have a strong background in the computational modelling of granular systems.
  • Applications must have a strong background in the development of scientific/engineering software.
  • Applicants must have experience in engineering programming languages.

Postdoc position at the University of Pau & Pays Adour

Applications are invited for a one year full-time postdoctoral research position at the University of Pau & Pays Adour, France, on an “Experimental and numerical study of reactive transport in porous media under deep geothermal conditions”. 

The project will be conducted in the framework of a collaboration between the Laboratoire de Thermique, Energétique et Procédés (LaTEP) and IFP Énergies nouvelles (IFPEN), supported by CARNOT ISIFoR and IFPEN, and aims to improve the prediction of barite precipitation under geothermal conditions. In that prospect, the approach proposed in this project will combine laboratory experiments and reactive transport modeling.
