LARAM, founded by the Geotechnical Engineering Group (GEG) of the University of Salerno in 2005, was envisioned to offer a permanent venue for PhD students, young researchers and renowned experts to interact and exchange ideas in the field of landslide risk. The main objectives of LARAM are: to develop high educational interdisciplinary programs for assessing, forecasting and mitigating landslide risk over large areas; to promote the creation of training programs aimed at solving real landslide risk problems using the most advanced theories and methodologies in the fields of geotechnical engineering, geomechanics, geology, physical geography, mathematical modelling, monitoring, GIS techniques, risk management and other relevant topics. These aims are achieved by means of yearly cycles of lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences.

PhD Topic: A non-destructive verification tool for imaging the 3D shape of grout injected into near surface soils

 This PhD project aims to develop a non-destructive verification tool for imaging the 3D shape of grout injected into near surface soils. Over the past 10 years, researchers at Strathclyde, in partnership with the Construction Company, BAM Nuttall, have been developing new grouting technologies for in-situ ground improvement and for repair of existing infrastructure. Key to successful commercialisation of these new grouting technologies is maintaining industrial confidence. Whilst in-situ injection strategies are highly attractive, both financially and environmentally, the physical extent of treated soil is extremely difficult to establish, making it hard to demonstrate success. An ideal solution to this issue would be to develop a tool that can detect the 3D shape of the grouted soil volume within the subsurface. At present, no commercial technology is available that can achieve this.

Ioannis Vardoulakis PhD Prize 2018 – 2nd call

The Bureau of ALERT Geomaterials has decided to fund the Ioannis Vardoulakis PhD Prize 2018. Since 2016, the PhD prize is entitled Ioannis Vardoulakis PhD Prize to commemorate Prof. Vardoulakis and his contributions to research and teaching in the field of Geomechanics.

The participation to the prize is open to all the PhD students coming from institutions belonging to ALERT, that have discussed their PhD thesis in 2017. The deadline for the applications is 31st May, 2018. The application procedure has to be done completely online via the application form (the application period is over).
