SEG23: extended deadline for extended abstracts: 28th February

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to announce an extended deadline of 28th February for the extended abstracts for the Symposium on Energy Geotechnics (SEG23) which will be held in Delft, 3-5 October 2023, organised under the auspices of the ISSMGE Technical Committee 308.

Please find more details of the conference on our conference and how to submit your extended abstract on our website: https://seg23.dryfta.com/. To encourage debate on the latest findings, we invite extended abstracts only (which will be peer reviewed), which will be published open access with their own digital online identifier (doi). No full-length papers will be requested.

You can submit your extended abstract to one of our general sessions or one of the mini symposia which are listed below:

  • Energy Geotechnics for Underground Climate Change – convened by Alessandro Rotta Loria and Asal Bidarmaghz
  • Induced seismicity – convened by Peter Fokker
  • Numerical analysis of energy geostructures – convened by Francesco Cecinato and Fleur Loveridge
  • Offshore Geotechnics – convened by Benjamin Cerfontaine and Anaïs Lovera
  • Gas migration in geomaterials – convened by Anne-Catherine Dieudonné, Séverine Levasseur and María Victoria Villar
  • Multiphysics and multiscale interactions in the context of energy storage and CO2 sequestration – convened by Gabriele Della Vecchia and Guido Musso

We are also delighted to announce that there will be two special issues based on contributions to the symposium in the highly regarded international journals:  Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment and Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology. Invitations will be extended to authors to extend their extended abstract into papers. The selection process will be announced in due course.

We look forward to welcoming you to Delft!

Best regards,

The SEG23 organising committee

Postdoc position at Politecnico di Milano

A 1-year post-doc position is available at Politecnico di Milano, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, on Molecular Dynamics simulations of superlubric granular particles.

The position is part of the project “SSLiP: Scaling-up SuperLubricity into Persistence” funded by an HORIZON-EIC-2021 Pathfinder-Open Grant. The project aims at studying the advanced lubricant properties of particular granular materials to establish a radically new way to drastically reduce friction.

A full description and information how to apply is given in the attached pdf and at https://www.polimi.it/en/faculty/working-at-the-politecnico/research-grants/a-r-default-2866a654d2

Candidates must hold a PhD degree in one of these disciplines: Computational Mechanics, Mechanical/Mathematical/Civil Engineering, Granular Physics, Computer science, Tribology or similar fields.

A background in computational mechanics, especially on molecular dynamics simulations, and in data processing is preferential.

For any additional information, see the attached pdf or please write a message to: diego.berzi@polimi.it or dalila.vescovi@polimi.it

Project starting date: April 1st, 2023

Net salary per month: ~EUR 2,000

Supervision: Prof. Diego Berzi, Dr. Dalila Vescovi

Application deadline: February 21st, 2023

PhD position at Université de Lorraine

In the context of deep nuclear wastes storage deep galleries will be backfilled with clay-based materials. These backfill must have specific hydromechanical properties to prevent water circulation along the repository after its closure. The backfill material will be partly made from the excavated material, i.e. Callovo-Oxfordian argillite that would have been stored at surface during the exploitation period, and mixed with sand to reach the target design properties. The hydromechanical properties of the backfill must remain stable over time. It is thus necessary to determine the relative impact of several factors such as the setting conditions, nature and dosage of treatment product, etc. on the properties of the backfill. The thesis will be focused at understanding the cross relationship between macroscopic hydromechanical properties, the reorganization of the material microstructure due to the swelling of clay particles upon hydration as well as the alteration processes associated to the circulation of alkaline water.

2nd International DECOVALEX Symposium on Coupled Processes in Radioactive Waste Disposal and Subsurface Engineering Applications

Troyes, France. 14-16 November 2023

Like the first DECOVALEX Symposium in 2019 (http://decovalex-coupled-processessymposium.org/), the event will bring together up to 200 participants discussing aspects of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in geological systems. The focus is on new and exciting advances in areas of coupled processes associated with a broad range of subsurface engineering, starting with radioactive waste disposal and extending to geothermal exploration, geological carbon sequestration, subsurface energy storage, etc. The symposium will also provide insights from the current phase of the international DECOVALEX project (https://decovalex.org/), an international collaboration for advancing the understanding of coupled THMC processes in geological systems.
