Postdoctoral Opening in Computational Geomechanics at the University of British Columbia (Canada)

The selected candidate will join the Theoretical & Applied Geomechanics research group at the University of British Columbia, working under the supervision of Prof. Mahdi Taiebat. The position involves a one-year appointment, with the possibility of a contract extension after this period. It is available from January 1st, 2023 or upon agreement. The selected candidate is expected to implement advanced constitutive laws, conduct numerical analyses with MPM/PFEM computational techniques, and apply ML techniques for inverse analysis.

Abstract submission for the Special Session on Image Analysis and Machine Learning for Geomechanics in ISMLG 2023

The rising interest and demand for energy geo-structures and energy storage  systems require a fundamental understanding of the  hydro-chemo-thermo-mechanically coupled processes in soils and rocks for  thermal piles, nuclear waste disposal, gas storage and caprock integrity, etc. Advanced imaging techniques provide essential insights  into the behaviour of geomaterials under various applied conditions,  including hydraulic pressure, chemical reaction, temperature, and  mechanical loading. For example, X-ray micro-tomography is a  non-destructive 3D imaging tool for the in-situ multi-physical  characterisation of geomaterials. Other imaging techniques include  digital cameras, neutron tomography, X-ray diffraction, and magnetic  resonance imaging.
 
Image  analysis and machine learning apply widely in our daily life, from face  recognition to self-driving cars. In geomechanics, machine learning is  becoming increasingly popular to enhance the quantitative information  that image analysis can provide through phase segmentation, fracture  recognition, particle tracking, etc. This session aims to attract  high-quality contributions that use image analysis and machine learning  in geomechanics.

PhD Position on “STOCHASTIC EVALUATION OF INFRASTRUCTURE RESILIENCE”

POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to work on an interdisciplinary research project involving artificial intelligence, stochastic analysis, geomechanics, infrastructure asset management, and climate change.
In this research project, we aim to develop a stochastic framework to assess the resiliency of infrastructure subject to climate disasters and extreme events. The findings can be of great importance for stakeholders and insurance companies.
The project will be conducted jointly at the University of Waterloo (Prof. Dipanjan Basu) and Polytechnique Montréal (Prof. Pooneh Maghoul).

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Proven experience in statistics, stochastic analysis, data analysis, machine learning,
resilience analysis, or related fields.
• Strong scientific programming skills with Python and/or R;
• Proven research-based publications in above-mentioned fields.
• Excellent technical writing for scientific publications.
• Strong communication skills.
• Excellent problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work well with a team and use initiative to achieve goals.
• A minimum G.P.A. of 3.6/4.0 or equivalent in your last 60 credit hours of study is required.
• A minimum IELTS score of 7.0 is required.
