Three PhD positions in soil mechanics at Charles University, Czech Republic

The Soil Mechanics group led by David Mašín at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, is seeking three motivated PhD students with experience in modelling and/or experiments to work on the following projects:

1) Calibration of advanced constitutive models (supervisor: Tomáš Kadlíček)
2) Evaluation of soil behaviour including creep and numerical modelling of slow-moving landslides in Central Bohemian Uplands (supervisor: Jan Jerman)
3) Thermal effects on the residual shear strength and creep behaviour of clays (supervisor: Gianvito Scaringi)

Session 28: Porous Media: transport, microstructural evolution, multi-physics coupling and instabilities

This session aims to bring together academic and industrial researchers to present recent scientific advances in the study of the behavior of porous media, whether they are geomaterials, man-made or natural materials. The session aims to focus on the development and identification of effective constitutive laws in porous media, under different stresses of physical, chemical, thermal and / or mechanical nature, studied separately or coupled. Research on transport phenomena (conductive / diffusive, convective / advective, ballistic / radiative) is a central topic of this session, as well as studies on the evolution of the microstructure of a porous medium (dissolution / precipitation, chemical reactions of deposition / ablation / erosion, mechanical deformations, localization, damage, etc.). This microstructural evolution can be analyzed at the local scale, integrated into a macroscopic formulation or studied experimentally. In addition, instabilities due to non-linearities and / or couplings between elementary phenomena, which may be linked to interfaces, natural convection, deformations or others, at different scales of porous media, are a focal research topic of this session.

Call for abstracts to EGU 2022 session on shallow geothermal energy

The session welcomes contributions about shallow geothermal energy applications, including traditional closed- and open-loop borehole heat exchangers as well as so-called energy geostructures (e.g. thermo-active foundations, walls, tunnels).

Different types of analysis and approaches are relevant to this session, spanning from the evaluation of ground thermal properties to the mapping of shallow geothermal potential, from energy storage and district heating to sustainability issues and consequences of the geothermal energy use, from the design of new heat exchangers and installation techniques to the energy and thermo-(hydro-)mechanical performance of energy geostructures, from the local behavior of a heat exchanger to the city scale implementation of energy geostructures. Contributions based on experimental, analytical and numerical modelling are welcome as well as interventions about legislative aspect.

The ALERT Bureau and the Board of directors would like to wish you a happy new year 2022.

The year 2021, although far better than 2020, was still under the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, we had the chance to meet in person in Aussois. This year’s edition was organized in a hybrid mode, with presenters and participants being able to access the workshop and doctoral school remotely. It allowed a greater number of participants, which is great! 

We hope that 2022 will allow us to further develop and strengthen the ALERT community, whatever the restrictions associated to Covid-19.

One Postdoctoral Position in DEM modelling at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in Computational Geomechanics.

About PolyU Hong Kong: the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is ranked the second-best universities for Civil Engineering in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Ranking 2021.

Available positions: There is currently one postdoctoral position at PolyU Hong Kong funded by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the year 2022. The position offers the possibility of working on development and programming of multiscale multiphysics discrete element method (DEM) for simulation of granular materials.

Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Computational Mechanics or other relevant disciplines and have the ability to build an independent, externally funded research program at the forefront of their field. Programming experience in C++/Python/Julia/MATLAB/etc., and numerical modelling experience using DEM codes are required. Applicants with experience in GPU parallel programming is preferred.

Research topics: The research topic mainly focuses on developing multiscale multiphysics DEM based modelling approach with high efficiency for soil particle breakage, seepage-induced erosion, offshore foundation, geohazards, etc.

Starting date: The position is expected to get started as early as possible.

Contract duration: 1~2 years (extensions are possible based on the performance of research achievements).
