The Session “Characterisation, remediation or management of contaminated sites and waste materials” will mainly focus on: i) multidisciplinary and multiscale characterisation of contaminated sites aimed to investigate the current state of the system and find experimental evidence of bio-chemo-mechanical coupling processes; ii) experimental and/or modelling studies addressing emerging remediation techniques; iv) emerging technique for treating and managing waste materials.

Mediterranean PhD School 2022

The Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering of the University of Naples Federico II is organizing the third edition of the Mediterranean PhD School. This year the School will be entitled “From Sustainable to Regenerative and Resilient Design” and will deal with various themes of Civil Engineering. In the framework of Geotechnical section, lectures will be given by prof. Alessandro Tarantino from the Strathclyde University of Glasgow and prof. Katherine Tsiampousi from the Imperial College of London, both addressing the new frontiers of geotechnical engineering in reducing environmental impact. The Ph.D. students are invited to attend the school freely (in presence or on-line) and eventually to present their research activities consistently with the theme of the school; a selected number of Ph.D. students will be admitted to an oral presentation of their research and will receive a reward of 500 euros if they will attend the competition in presence. Other technical and exercise activities are also planned in a competitive form with further awards.

Satellite course of the IACMAG conference on Multiscale numerical modelling of geomaterials in Grenoble

The course incudes half a day of technical visit of the Synchrotron facility in Grenoble on the 29th of August, and half a day of lectures on the 30th. The fees also include the social dinner on the 29th evening and the coffee breaks. Transfer to Torino to attend the main conference will be eventually organised for the 30th afternoon, depending on the number of interested people.

Tec 21 Winter school (5th Edition), Grenoble

The Tec 21 Winter School on “Multi scale approaches and multiphysics couplings in fluid and solid mechanics” will be held in Grenoble – 30th January to 3rd February 2023.

Important societal issues require to solve problems of increasing complexity. A key vector of progress relies on multi-scale and multi-physics approaches. The objective of the winter school is to review the different approaches, numerical and experimental techniques to tackle the complexity of today’s engineering problems. All the courses are illustrated through various up-to-date examples. Two days are devoted to practical laboratory work, combining experiments and numerical modeling. The last day of the school is dedicated to a particular theme. This year this day will be dedicated to “mechanics at the nanoscale”.

Registration for the ALERT Workshop and School 2022 is OPEN!

Dear ALERT community,

I am pleased to inform you that the registration for the ALERT Geomaterials Workshop and School 2022 is now open! The preliminary programs of the School and the Workshop are available here.

In the continuity of last year edition, it was decided to propose you two alternatives for your registration to the workshop and doctoral school: either you can come and participate in Aussois, or you can passively attend those remotely (no questions can be asked). Furthermore, all presenters must attend on-site.

This year, the ALERT Bureau has decided to offer one day of accomodation to:

  • all PhD students attending the doctoral school and coming from an ALERT member institution;
  • all retired researchers attending the workshop.

Please read the hints in the registration form! After filling the form and pressing the button “Register”, a window will open with your invoice. Please print the window with the invoice for your records! You will also get an email with the registration data afterwards. If you are an ALERT members, the corresponding representative of your ALERT institution will receive the registration data too.

Reminder: Short course on Propagation of Mechanical Waves in Deformable Solids and Meta-Materials

In the week from September 5-9, 2022 a short course has been organized by the University of Pavia (Italy) entitled “Wave Propagation in Deformable Solids and Meta-Materials“. The course will be held in a prestigious Renaissance Residence in downtown Pavia. The lecturers are well-known specialists in their respective disciplines. The schedule of the course is very intense with 6-7 hours of lectures every day. A limited number of PhD students and post-docs who are not supported by their own academic institutions can apply to student residences in Pavia which offer lodging at a particularly convenient rate. The course will be held in presence however due to Covid-19 restrictions, the auditorium can host up to a maximum of 50 participants. Reservations will be made on a first-come first-served basis. Advanced course on Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation (LID 2022)

Advanced course on Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation (LID 2022),
taught by Milan Jirásek in Prague, Czech Republic, 5-9 September 2022.

This course provides an overview of modeling approaches used in the mechanics of inelastic materials and structures, with special attention to objective description of highly localized deformation modes such as cracks or shear bands. It is one of the RILEM educational courses. The course is intended for graduate students at the doctoral level, but it can be equally useful to motivated master students, post-doctoral researchers, or senior researchers who are not specialists in this field.
