I am pleased to share that my book, With a grain of salt – from discrete to continuum granular mechanics, is now complete and freely available online.
The book is intended for undergraduate students seeking an introduction to the mechanics of granular materials, with a perspective that extends beyond the topics typically covered in standard university curricula. It is also aimed at graduate and PhD students pursuing research in this field, as well as researchers who may wish to broaden their expertise beyond their primary area—for example, soil mechanists interested in granular flows or fluid mechanists dealing with static granular assemblies. Postdoc Position: Suction Bucket Foundations for Revetments in Deep Soft Soils
Dear Colleagues,
We are looking for an enthusiastic and accomplished postdoctoral researcher to join our team at the Computing Center for Geotechnical Engineering of Zhejiang University. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in geotechnical engineering or a related field, with a proven track record of excellence.
This project investigates bucket foundation revetments on deep soft foundations, with direct relevance to coastal infrastructure development in China. Using physical model tests, CEL large-deformation FEM, and CFD-FEM fluid-structure interaction modelling, the research will investigate suction bucket installation mechanisms, long-term bearing capacity under wave and surcharge loading, and develop a practical design method for bucket foundation revetments.

Submissions must be in JPG format and follow a banner aspect ratio of 1000 × 300 pixels Similar ratios are accepted, but images deviating significantly from this format won’t be considered. Each contestant may submit up to three pictures.
Submitting photos to the contest and voting require the use of an institutional email address. Each voter may vote only once per picture and assign up to three stars.

Autumn school in soil modelling
NTNU’s Geotechnical Group together with Dr. Medicus from University of Innsbruck offers a “Autumn School” in Soil Modelling from October 12th to 16th, 2026. This school provides a background for development and application of the soil models used in continuum-based computer codes for geotechnical applications. The school focuses on soil behaviour, elastoplastic theory, hypo- and hyperplasticity, selected material models and their parameters. It also provides some insight into numerical implementation of soil models. The school aims at providing a general theoretical framework for interpretation of the mechanical behaviour of soils.

Tenure-track position likely to be available in the CNRS 2026CPJ DYNO SOP: Water dynamics in porous media
A tenure-track position is expected to be available through a CNRS 2026 CPJ program on water dynamics in porous media, and candidates are invited to apply at IC2MP in Poitiers, France.
The junior professorship CNRS (CPJ) is a new recruitment channel that can provide access to a permanent position in the category of senior CNRS research directors, equivalent to Full professors in France.
The applicant’s project should aim to deepen the understanding of water/solutes structure and dynamics in porous media at different temporal and spatial scales in order to determine/predict the macroscopic properties of materials (hydration, mechanical, chemical, transport…) where water is present. To reach this objective, approaches consisting of coupling results obtained by experimental techniques (laboratory, field) to multi-scale theoretical developments is expected.

The two positions will focus on:

The projects will combine theoretical modelling, statistical physics, numerical simulations, and monitoring data to investigate the mechanisms governing failure precursors, instability evolution, and predictability in geophysical systems.
The successful candidates will join a dynamic international research team and collaborate with leading researchers and international partners working on geohazard forecasting and risk mitigation.
