Following the success of last year, we are pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the Winter School on Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment (https://gete-school.epfl.ch/), which will be held on January 22nd-24th 2019, in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. Geomechanics, Environment and Energy are increasingly related and contemporary themes. The goal of the school is to provide participants with a deep understanding on selected topics in Geomechanics which are fundamental for applications related to Energy and the Environment. This Winter School is organized in the framework of the international journal Geomechanics for Energy and the Environment.

After filling the form and pressing the button “Register”, a window will open with your invoice. Please print the window with the invoice for your records! You will also get an email with the registration data afterwards. In case of the registration of the ALERT members, the corresponding representative of the ALERT institution will receive the registration data too.

PhD position: Cemented waste deterioration by sulphate attack: chemistry and effect on structural and mechanical properties

Candidates are sought for a PhD position in the field of experimental investigation aimed at improving phenomenological understanding of the chemistry of delayed ettringite formation (DEF) and of its effect on mineralogical, structural and mechanical properties of cemented waste forms. This is set in the context of cement-waste solidification/stabilization studies for radioactive waste disposal application. This is a joint PhD programme by SCK•CEN and ONDRAF/NIRAS in collaboration with Gent University, Belgium, under the mentorship of Prof. Nele De Belie. The potential candidates should hold a master’s degree preferably in material science (good knowledge of chemistry) or civil/structural or mechanical engineering and should preferably have an exposure to chemistry and mechanics. The position is open for European as well as international candidates (except restricted nationalities, which can be found in the SCK•CEN academy portal). An initial project proposal is available in the link below.

Phd student – Numerical Simulation of THC-processes

The Division of Geothermal Research at KIT (http://www.agw.kit.edu/251.php) focuses on reservoir characterization, exploration and engineering in deep geothermal applications. The projects are conducted at a national and international level, with numerous partners and application fields worldwide. Key aspects of research in this domain are the development and application of numerical tools to simulate coupled non-linear thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes.

The position is aiming at the development and application of a numerical tool (MOOSE solver environment) to solve coupled thermo-hydraulic-chemical (THC) processes, considering two-phase flow (Navier-Stokes), multi component transport as well as mineral dissolution and precipitation.

COURSE IN SOIL MODELLING September 3rd- 7th, 2018

NTNU’s Geotechnical Group offers a PhD Course in Soil Modelling from September 3rd to 9th, 2018.

The course provides a background for development and application of the soil models used in finite element based computer codes. It focuses on soil behaviour, elasto-plastic theory, selected material models and their parameters. The aim is to provide a general theoretical framework for interpretation of the mechanical behaviour of soils.

The course is at postgraduate/PhD level. It is based on a combined mathematical and graphical approach but is designed to give a platform for practical application in geotechnical design.
