Abstract of the ALERT Special Lecture 2025

Mechanics-Informed Machine Learning for The Discovery of Constitutive Models

Charbel Farhat, Stanford University, US

With the advent of machine learning (ML), the use of deep artificial neural networks (ANNs) for data-driven constitutive modeling has gained prominence in computational mechanics. This is particularly true in the context of numerical homogenization for heterogeneous materials. Nonetheless, ANNs are not without shortcomings for constitutive modeling. In their standard form, they are built to simply map input data to output data – typically, without fundamental restrictions. Thus, when such ANNs are exploited in physics-based numerical simulations, they can violate some laws of physics, in which case confidence in the simulation-based predictions is reduced. Hence, this lecture will present a trustworthy ML framework for the data-driven discovery of constitutive models for heterogeneous materials that is broadly mechanics-informed. The framework enforces on the ANN’s architecture a long list of desirable mathematical properties that guarantees the satisfaction of an even longer list of physical/mechanical constraints, including: dynamic stability, material stability, and internal variable stability; objectivity; consistency; fading memory; recovery of elasticity; the second law of thermodynamics; and material non-inversion. The lecture will show that embedding these notions in a learning approach reduces a model’s sensitivity to noise and promotes its robustness to inputs outside the training domain. It will also highlight the merits of the proposed trustworthy ML framework for numerous engineering applications, including the prediction of the supersonic inflation dynamics of a parachute system with a canopy made of a woven fabric.

How to join Aussois by train – ALERT Meeting 2024

Dear colleagues,

We are getting close to the start of the ALERT Workshop. A few details about your journey to Aussois:

As last year, the railroad line between Saint Jean de Maurienne and Modane is closed due to a rock slope instabillity. This is why there is no TGV between Paris and Modane.

You can get to Modane by taking a train between Chambéry and Saint Jean de Maurienne and then a bus to Modane.

When you arrive in Modane by bus, there are cabs to call:
– Taxi Haute Maurienne: +33 4.79.20.51.57
– Lionnel transport: +33 6.09.68.39.91
– Gros : +33 6.60.38.01.23
– Mont Taxi: +33 6.60.47.03.06
– Alpes Taxi: +33 6.31.55.82.71

As in previous years, we have organized a direct bus service between Saint Jean de Maurienne (at the bus station) and Aussois on Sunday September 29. It will leave Saint Jean at 4pm. Another bus is planned for a later date, and you’ll be receiving information soon.

See you soon in Aussois,
Frédéric COLLIN.

LAST REMINDER – Registration for the ALERT Workshop and School 2024 – Deadline 1 Sept.

Dear ALERT community,

This is the last reminder that the registration for the ALERT Geomaterials Workshop and School 2024 is open! The preliminary programme of the Doctoral School and Workshop is available here.

Please note that the deadline for registration is SEPTEMBER 1st! It won’t be extended so make sure to register!

In the continuity of last year edition, a remote access to the doctoral school is proposed at the same price as the on-site option. However, this remote option only gives access to the passive attending of the presentations, and no questions could be asked.

This year, the ALERT Bureau has once again decided to offer one day of accomodation to:

  • all PhD students attending the doctoral school and belonging to an ALERT member institution (in a double room only);
  • all retired researchers attending the workshop.

Please read the hints in the registration form! After filling the form and pressing the button “Register”, a window will open to prompt you to save the invoice as a .pdf file. Please save it for your records! You will also get an email with the registration data afterwards. If you are an ALERT member, the corresponding representative of your ALERT institution will receive the registration data too.

Click here to register for the ALERT Workshop and School 2024.

The accommodation in Aussois will be processed in the order of the registrations (see the hints in the registration form). Please note that the number of rooms in the CNRS “Centre Paul Langevin” is limited.
See also hints on how to get to Aussois.

If you need to modify or cancel your registration, please send an email to director@alertgeomaterials.eu, mentioning your invoice number, at least one week before the meeting. Individuals who fail to honor their registration will be required to pay a fee to the hotel covering the cost of both the room reservation and the food services.

Looking forward to meeting you in Aussois!

ON-SITE FULLY BOOKED & SANITARY UPDATE – ALERT Workshop & School 2021

Dear ALERT community,

As you may know, the registration for the ALERT Workshop and School 2021 is open! The preliminary program of the Workshop and School is available here.

It was decided to propose you two alternatives for your registration to the workshop and doctoral school: either you can come and participate in Aussois, or you can attend those remotely.

UNFORTUNATELY, the number of participants that can come to Aussois is limited to 160, and has been reached. The only registration possible from now on is therefore remotely.

ABOUT THE SANITARY CONDITIONS

As a reminder, the restrictions for entering France will depend on your country of departure and your vaccination status (more information here and here).

Your stay (and access) at the CNRS “Centre Paul Langevin” where the event takes place is conditional on the presentation of a HEALTH PASS upon your arrival. This means that you must have at least one of the following documents:

  • A vaccination certificate (provided you have a complete vaccination schedule);
  • A negative test (RT-PCR or antigen of less than 48 hours). For unvaccinated travelers from Cyprus, Spain, Greece, Malta, the Netherlands and Portugal, a negative PCR or antigen test of less than 24 hours is required;
  • A certificate of recovery from Covid-19 (RT-PCR or positive antigen test dated at least 11 days and less than 6 months).

More information can be found here. For members of “green list countries” (see the website), a sworn statement attesting to the absence of symptoms of covid-19 infection and contact with a confirmed case of covid-19 is also required. You can find it here.

Furthermore, the center has implemented a strict health protocol, providing for the wearing of masks in all premises and common areas in order to guarantee the safety of all. The full health and safety protocol can be accessed here, please read it before your arrival.
